Filming areas
Today I went to the place we used to film a short shot of the sky spinning. We were lucky enough to capture a shot of an Aeroplane in the sky that the spinning camera made look like it was spinning out of control.

Filming : Extra shots
Today we filmed the 'filler' shots for our video to break up from the band in different sections. We filmed shots of spinning skies to add in. Their disorientating look fits in with the random style of our video. We are going to upload a shot of the location tommorow, along with a possible cut of the footage.

Filming Plan : The Weather
As you can see from the screen shot, the weather forecast for this weekend is sunny, this helps us out with filming as we do not have to contend with the weather. Also, the weather looks fine throughout the rest of the week, meaning we could film throughout the week if needed.
The Lyrics : Emailing the Band
In order to get the most accurate lip syncing I asked one of the band members to send me the lyrics to the song , I got the lyrics from another member of the band as a result:
Unfortunately, The member of the band we had been contacting has since left the band, leaving us to find the lyrics ourselves.

Video Planning : Our group's jobs
In our group we designated certain jobs for each member to to whilst we are creating the film. For example my job will be to control the camera work whilst we are filming. Emma, another member of our group has the task of finding the people to play the members of the band. And Ahmed, the third member of the group, will be tasked with constructing the sets for our different shots in the video.
Despite having individual main jobs, we will try to alternate them between us so that we all get to learn a new skill from each different practice. This will give us a better overall understanding of the processes that go into creating a music video. This alternating stance to tasks will continue into the post production phase of the video.

Video Planning : Final Idea
For our final idea that we are going to try to obtain as many distinctive settings as possible and link them together in editing. In order to do so we are going to go to a number of locations, and shoot individual parts of the video at those locations.
Locations needed:
Various Park settings
Various garages
Shops
Playparks
Pathways
Other distinctive settings.
We need to have the 'band' members who aren't singing in motion whilst they are on screen, otherwise they are pointless to the viewer. Other than this, they can distract from possible problems with the film, as the viewers concentrate on the band members.
We are going to need enough takes to be able to edit them together for quick edits.

Possible filming ideas
To make our film stand out more we could use certain post production techniques to increase the colours of our video and make them stand out more. The advantage of this comes from a visual aspect as the video would look more distinct and would stand out more.
However it is possible to over edit the video and ruin it. This is possible by over stressing the colours and shading, or by continually switching effects. The best way to edit the video is to make subtle changes, not drastic ones.

Survey Monkey - Results
Here's a screen shot of my SurveyMonkey Questionnaire, below it shows two results for each question :
As you can see from the couple of results we received the participants answers are varied and show a variety of interests. However the fact that they both watch videos on youtube is not a coincidence. Generally most young people today watch music videos on the internet as it is free and widely available on a multitude of outlets, including mobile phones.

Student digipak analysis
This is an example of a student made digipak for a Student screen academy event. As you can tell from the title of the event, the film is based on Screen activities. This digipak is a very good example of a product that meets the theme that is set. Using the image of a Clapper, which is used to distinguish between takes whilst filming.
The digipak has a well made, clear, straight forward design that fits it's purpose, in this case a Screen event.
The one area in which the digipak is lacking comes from it's simplicity. Generally digipaks for cd's and albums nowadays are more elaborate and colourful. Despite it fitting a purpose it lacks a distinctive image or design to be suitable for a music digipak, therefore we wouldn't be able to produce something similar.

Ideas Prezi
Possible settings
For our video idea we are going to rely on having different settings to switch the band into and possibly having them switch their outfits. This is vital in creating our video as viewers will lose interest in our video if it begins to be repetitive.
We narrowed it down in our search to use a couple of base locations for our film. Our main search criteria was to look for places that have a gritty look to them, with a bit of colour. but mainly that they have distinctive characteristics about them. Here is an example of one of the set pieces we will most likely use:
As you can see this image of a local park fits our description for what we are looking for. And parts of it will most likely be used in our filming process. Along with the distinctive colours of the tress at this time of year, it has a slightly darker look that is brought about by the colours themselves.
This will be one of our settings in the music video due to this.

How our idea fits with the genre
Considering the band we are using (The Midnight Heavy) come under the Rock/Indie genre of music. We decided to try and create a video that has unique shots in it, but borrows from other famous videos in the genre. We saw a video by Bombay bicycle club in which the band moved between various colourful backgrounds that appeared gritty on camera, such as a colourful garage. The idea of moving between different settings sounded appealing to us as we could make it look like the lead singer lip syncing was singing the song all at once in these different positions. However where our video is different is we have decided not to go with a story based video, something that is common in the rock genre.
Resources for our music video
For our video we will need:
4 band members ( At least one male)
Camera
Tri-pod
Several locations, varying from parks to places of distinct colours perhaps, Example garages and parks.
several types of clothing for those playing the members of the band.
An example of a band that dress in stereotypically indie clothing:
As you can see it's a very casual style that is represented here by this generic band.
Nothing too extravagant is shown in their clothing, which will make it easier for us to obtain.

More Developed idea
Since my last post our group has come up with a few base ideas that we are going to structure our video around. These will be stressed throughout the video and will attempt to keep up with the tempo of the song. The ideas will be visualised slightly onto a storyboard in a later post.
1. We're going to have shots during the main chorus where the band is set infront of alternating locations. Whilst the actor playing the lead singer is miming the sing, an idea maybe to have the other members of the band in motion. Creating something that takes focus away from the lead singer lip-syncing.
2. Linked to the first idea. Having the different members of the band wearing different costumes as we cut to the different settings, creating more variety in the video.
3. Another possible idea may be to have similar shots of the lead singing but from different angles. That way we can cut between the the different angles during the video.
We're most likely not to have a story that our video is based around. However the idea of having the many settings and costumes is most probably going to be our base idea. This creates variety in our video. But also, means we can be more creative. As we don't have to stick to one strict idea we can variate things as we are filming to create better shots from our ideas.
A key part of our filming process will be creating enough variety and change to keep the viewer interested despite there being no actual story, a challenge we are going to tackle with some hopefully unique shots and edits.

Information about copyright
Copyright gives the creator of an original concept of product exclusive rights to it's production and sale. It gives the owner the 'rights to copy' and the right to be credited for their work. Along with this , it gives the owner the right to decide if anyone can use or distribute their work.
This is important when creating our student music videos. As is we break these rules, we can be prosecuted legally. That is why we ask permission from artists before we use their songs. As if we didn't we would be liable for prosecution.

Broadening Audiences and increasing sales through and for a music video
A music video increases sales in itself it it is unique or of good quality. The same could be said for a magazine advert. Both are ways in which to appeal to new audiences and those that are already possible fans of your products. Here is a slide rocket giving two ideas of a music video that increases the value of the song and a magazine advert advertising an album.
Initial ideas #1
Just over a week ago , our group discussed some possible ideas for our music video, during this discussion , one member of our group suggested an idea to work into the music video. He said that we could have the actors playing the band moving between different backgrounds wearing different clothes as they go. This ideas inspiration comes from a video by The Midnight Beast. The challenging part of this idea is working it into the video but at the same time making it fit with the genre of our song , which is rock. But the positive to this idea is the opposite to that , maybe by using a completely unrelated idea to our genre we can create a more unique and successful video.

Audience research : Wordle
Using Wordle I was able to get a small consumer feedback on what they would expect in a music video. Here are the results:
As you can see, the two largest words on the wordle are 'Location' and the 'Song'. Showing us that out of the people we asked this is what they most expected to see in a music video.

Magazine Advert Analysis
Magazine adverts are another way to attract an audience outside of your original fans. They generally are quite stylised in order to stand out inside a magazine. Here is an example of a magazine album advert for Plan B's Defamation of Strickland Banks album.
As we can see from this advert. It uses bold fonts, bright colours and shades on a black and white picture that really stands out. This is important as it catches the eye of whoever is reading the magazine and forces them to pay attention to what has been written.
Vox Pops
A Vox pop allows people to give an opinion on different questions in a short edited video. To produce a vox Pop you ask different members of the public questions, film their answers, and the edit them together to create a video of their answers.
Vox pops are a good way to gain people's opinions on subjects of your choice, in this case we are asking questions about music videos.

Music Video success criteria
For a Music video to be successful it needs to hit certain goals. Initially and arguably most importantly, the song needs to be of good quality and unique to listeners. Whilst also hitting certain conventions of that particular genre , for example guitars in a rock song .
Secondly, the video has to have a creative look to it that makes it stand out compared to other music videos , like an interesting theme or idea. And finally in my opinion, the video needs to be able to withstand the test of time, some of the greatest music videos of all time are successful in part because of their longevity, for example Michael Jackson's Thriller , Which was number 1 on channel 4's top 100 music videos list.

Artist research - Attracting an audience
A key to selling songs an albums is selling to your original fans whilst creating a product that branches out to other groups of fans. So it is important that you mix different styles to create something's unique and different to genre conventions. For example, a rapper working with a rock band to create a song.
In 2007 Rapper Kanye West worked with singer Chris Martin to create the song "Homecoming" , it mixed West's rapping with Coldplay's style of music.
The album cover in which the song appeared , named "Graduation". Used a colourful background with a Cartoon Bear in West's clothing on the front , a far cry from stereotypical rap album covers. The album enjoyed critical success and went on to be a platinum album.

Analysing an Album cover : SexBox
As you can see, the album cover is very similar to the vibe that comes across with the Sex Pistols. Aggressive, different and unconventional the cover shows a drawn on Great Britain flag, and a drawn on track list, fitting the Sex Pistols and their anti Society, rebellious style.
Analysing an Album cover : Watch the Throne
Sometimes, an album cover can share elements with the name of the album or artist but not be directly linked to them. An example of this is Kanye West and Jay Z's Watch the Throne. The album cover is basically a gold square with an intricate pattern inscribed onto it. The link lies with the Title 'Watch the Throne'. When someone is royalty we assume generally that they have a vast amount of money and objects, stereotypically gold. The gold design on the front cover although not directly fits the name of the album or artists, still has a link to it's meaning in design.

Here is the album front cover for 'Watch the Throne'.
Analysing a Digipak
A Digipak can give the person looking at it a small idea as to what the band's album is about and the general vibe of the music. Generally, the Digipak matches the usual vibe that it's genre has already been using. You would expect for example a rock band to have a similar feel to it compared to another rock band's digipak.
Here is a sliderocket analysing a digipak:

A Digipak is the front and inside cover of an album. It has a general set of conventions that are expected to be on it, such as:
Track list
A Barcode
The Record company's logo
Disk impression and separate disk design
Six panels
A spine with the Artists name and album

Preliminary Task - What I learned
From our Preliminary task I have learned most importatnly about vertical editing. I have found that it is much easier to film the different shots all singing the song the whole way through, to then edit and drop between the different clips. Not only does it look smoother, but it is also much easier to edit than smaller specifically filmed clips. I've also learned about filming in the sense that you need to pick the right location in order to avoid things such as unintentional camera glare.
Overall I feel that our preliminary task went quite well, the uploaded quality to youtube was dissapointing but the lip syncing was successful, to make the video better we could have been more creative with the shots and to use a girl to sing the womans part in the song.

Conventions of the Music video
Like everything else, Music videos have a set of general conventions that people try to follow and is some cases avoid depending on the vision for a video. Some of the conventions are seen as Negative stereotype that are usually associated with certain genres of music. For example In rap music , you would expect girls and cars and extravagant objects. This is an example of a negative set of conventions, as they lead to a lot of music videos becoming very similar and un-inspired.
However these conventions can have positive outcomes, you can learn from them and try to avoid them when you are making your own video, which would lead to unique and exciting videos.

Case Study - Emil Nava
Emil Nava is a successful music video director who has worked with some up an coming, and famous British artists. He has directed the videos to some very successful songs such as Ed Sheeran's "Lego House" and Rita Ora's "RIP"
Along with his music videos, Nava has made television adverts as well, Including an advert for Loreal,
His varying work has resulted in some popular and successful music videos from the 21st century.
His first video was for a band named Kid British, and song is called 'Our House', the video cost £20,000 and was filmed in one day, after being in pre production for 10 days and was only in post production for 3 days. It also used a cast of local people from the Manchester area:

Case Study - Jamie Thraves
Jamie Thraves begun by making short films whilst he was a university. He used these short films he had made as a 'calling card' in order for him to get his foot in the door with Factory films. They eventually let him begin to shoot £5,000 music videos.
The system of making the music videos works like this:
-A commissioner sends a track to between 5-10 directors.
-The directors send back a 'treatment' for the track that includes such things as a storyboard.
-However this in unpaid.
-The director who has submitted the best treatment, is then commissioned to make the video.
-Only then is the director paid.
The lively-hood of the directors is solely based on whether or not they get the commission.
Thraves sent treatments for both of his best known videos, Radiohead's 'Just', and Coldplay's 'The Scientist'.
He has also shot three feature films, 'The low down', 'The cry of the Owl' and 'Treacle Jr'.
Here are the videos for 'Just' and 'The Scientist'.

Top 100 music videos - No.2 & 1 - Peter Gabriel 'Sledgehammer' - Michael Jackson 'Thriller'
SLEDGEHAMMER
The quality of the stop motion animation in Sledgehammer is what makes this video so memorable a a No.2 in the list. The animation is imaginative and flows nicely as the song goes along, the singer Peter Gabriel looks as though he is actually morphing and changing into the clay figures in the video. The overall brilliance of the video comes from the ability of it to continue to look impressive even today and stands amongst modern videos as a top class production.
THRILLER
Without a doubt the most influential video ever is Michael Jackson's Thriller. Still today the number 1 sold album of all time, the video to Thriller was a cultural phenomenon. Requiring it's own TV slot time after midnight because it's 'scary' premise to be shown. Considering there wasn't a British MTV at the time, millions of people tuned in to see the long exciting video perform in a Hollywood style movie production with music. Because of the youtube generation, it's almost impossible to imagine a video with the ability to create such a media sensation and cultural sensation that Thriller had and has created and changing the landscape of music videos, without a doubt, the number 1 music video of all time.

Top 100 music videos - No.4 & 3 - Queen 'Bohemian Rhapsody' - A-ha 'Take on me'
BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY
Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody video was only as a result of them not wanting to appear on Top of the Pops, as in those days the No.1 song in the charts used to be performed live in the studio, or if not they would show live footage of the song being played at a previous time. The video to this song however was shot quickly , and effectively, leading it to be as well recognized a video as there ever has been, as the main shots of the video were identical to the bands album cover. The fact that the video is still recognized today shows how it has stood well to the test of time and is still very memorable.
TAKE ON ME
The video to A-Ha's 'Take on Me' is such a memorable video because still today people are confused as to how some of the technical parts of the video were actually achieved. The effortless combination of animation and live action fits together perfectly as the video shows great skill and execution. However, the real great point to the video is the added value it gave to a song that had tanked with it's first release, but after it released a second time with the video it became a huge success.

Top 100 music videos - No.6 & 5 - Robbie Williams 'Rock DJ' - Madonna 'Like a Prayer'
ROCK DJ
This video is mostly memorable because of the controversy and odd nature of the ending. At the end of the video, Singer Williams strips his skin off of his body and thus created more controversy than the actual original base of the video already had. The initial controversy was created by the somewhat suggestive style of the video throughout, combine this with the song being a number 1 in the charts, makes the video a memorable one.
LIKE A PRAYER
This video's created controversy is a prime example of how Madonna was able to change her image throughout her career whilst also keeping her self relevant and spoke about by those in the media. The video shows Madonna being intimate with a Black Jesus in a church. Which caused massive controversy amongst 'traditional' religious people and music listeners, as the concept offended them, however it is a prime example of a star using controversy to create attention for themselves.

Top 100 music videos - No.8 & 7 - The Verve 'Bittersweet symphony' - Michael Jackson 'Billie Jean'
BITTERSWEET SYMPHONY
The memorable aspect of this video is the sheer lack of care the lead singer of the band shows as he walks down the street knocking down any and everything that gets in his way. It play's on the stereotype that is common in the UK , that people in the North are hard and tough in contrast to those in the south who are perceived as soft. The video has been subject to parody over the years including the song 'Vindaloo'. The slight comedy aspect of the video and the singer's performance makes the video more memorable along with the fact that the song is now used as the main song for ITV's coverage of the UEFA Champions league football tournament.

BILLIE JEAN
Part of the uniqueness of the Billie Jean video comes as a result of Singer Michael Jackson's fascination with things that are 'magical'. So for example as he is walking down the street the pavement slabs he stepped on light up upon contact. However, not all of the slabs were wired to light up. This meant that Jackson had to create a routine on the fly to hit certain steps highlighting the skill and awareness he has whilst dancing.

Top 100 music videos - No.10 & 9 - Nirvana 'Smells like teen spirit' - Madonna 'Vogue'
SMELLS LIKE TEEN SPIRIT
The look of the video to smells like teen spirit takes the look of a 'corny' American high school and turns it into a dark, depressing setting. The scene has a slight orange tinted, dark glow to it, like a fire. But this dark image fits in perfectly with the mood and the sound of the music, dark and aggressive, the song and video are memorable as part of a culture that rose in the 90's and changed the landscape of popular music at the time.
VOGUE
As Madonna's career has progressed, she has managed to change her image significantly in order to attempt to stay current with the music and fashion in different ears of time. 'Vogue' is an example of this, as a popular dance in the 90's , Madonna capitalises on the craze of the dance 'Vogueing' with this video and hence why it is more memorable.

Top 100 music videos - No. 42 - Bjork - It's all so quiet
As the video is called 'It's all so quiet', you would expect the video to be set in a somewhat quiet, subdued place, as it is, in a tyre shop. But as the video progresses the pace of the song picks up and the setting contrasts the speed and sound of the music. As it moves onto the street it continues the 'mundain' settings that don't fit with the song. What makes this video stand out is how the settings come to life as the song picks up at points, with dancers and moving props the song becomes more exciting at points in he music where other wise it's a somewhat dull song. The video adds value to the song.

Top 100 music videos - No.35 - Sinead O'Connor - Nothing compares 2U
This music video is most memorable because of the real emotion that is being expressed by O'Connor down to some of the words in the song. Considering she had lost her mother, one of the lines sparks some emotion from the singer, and she begins to cry on camera. And this is what makes the video stand out more than others. As it is shot majority of the time in extreme close-up, the experience becomes more intense and personal for the viewer as they see her real emotions on camera.

Top 100 music videos - No.49 - Jamiroquai - Virtual Insanity
Jamiroquai's Virtual Intensity confuses the audience into wondering how they make the video and thus makes it that more involving. By moving the walls around on a floor the creators of the video were able to create the illusion that the floor itself is moving. The performance by the band's singer makes it that much more believable as he slides along the floor and avoids pieces of furniture. It's the well made illusion that makes this video more long lasting.
Top 100 music videos - No.50 - Paul Simon - You can call me Al
By using then comedy giant Chevy Chase in the video to you can call me Al, the effect of adding comedy to the song gives it slightly more value. By using Chase, it also brings more fans to the video that may have been Chevy Chase fans. However, just putting Chase in the video doesn't guarantee the video being a success, it was Chase's successful miming that makes the video seem believable and appear well made.
Top 100 music videos - No.55 - Fatboy Slim - Praise you
This video to Fatboy Slim's 'Praise You' is a great example of a video that is completely different to regular videos in the sense that it is filmed in a public place, with regular members of the public who are unaware of what was about to happen. Leading the dance, director Spike Jonze dances outside a cinema with other members of the crowd. However it's the rest of the public's reactions that make the video as they generally have no clue as to what is going on.

Top 100 music videos - No. 66 - Bob Dylan - Subterranean Homesick Blues
This videos brilliance comes from it's simplicity. Filmed outside of the back of the Savoy Hotel, the video shows a man switching cards with the words of the song written on them for the entire video. And the fact that he cannot keep up with the pace of the song and loses track, shot in only one take, the video is a unique take on music video filming. And has since been parodied many times by other artists.
Top 100 music videos - No. 69 - Frankie goes to Hollywood - Two Tribes
This video was widely known mainly because of the controversy that it was based on and the controversy it created. The video depicts then American president Ronald Reagan and Russian Prime Minister Konstantin Chernenko, in the middle of a boxing ring surrounded by many people whilst they fight. The reason why this was so controversial was because at the time, the US was in the midst of the Cold War with the Russians, and for them to approach this topic with such a tongue in cheek style caused outrage.
Top 100 Music videos - No. 85 - Sid Vicious - My Way
Sid Vicious cover of a famous Frank Sinatra song My Way is a clear an example as there is for what the late Sex Pistol star and their Punk movement stood for. Defiance for conventional ideas of music and behaviour, this cover changes something slow into an ironically fast and quick venture, much like Vicious' life which ended age 22 after a drug overdose. Supposedly it was hard to film the video as Vicious was a tough man to work with, and was also at that point was heavily addicted to Heroin, and died not long after the videos release. The video had the singer wearing a suit singing in an odd fashion to footage of a crowd from a more traditional style concert.

Editing to the beat task
In this task we were asked to edit a small amount of a song with different random clips of people in animal costumes doing different activities. From it I learned how to edit somewhat successfully to a song which will hopefully help me when I create my final project eventually. I did find it difficult however to find specific parts of the clips that fit with the word's of the song and the overall song's vibe.

100 Greatest Music Videos : No. 92 : Herbie Hancock - Rockit - 1983
Despite it's odd idea, Hancock's video was truly groundbreaking for black musicians in the 80's. Prior to his brief appearance in his video to Rockit MTV pretty much didn't show black artists on their channel in music videos. So by him having such a unique video in which he appears broke the barrier for black artists and MTV.
100 Greatest music videos : No. 96 : So Solid Crew - 21 seconds to go - 2001
One of the reasons why this video was so important for so solid crew was because it gave some of their more prominent members a small opportunity to introduce themselves to the audience. Along with this, the video was important in the eyes of society as it changed the 'cleaner' image that was usually associated with British music and music videos. However, the video was controversial because this as essentially it involved youths 'running riot' on society, something that many people didn't agree with, but is common place in today's videos.

My favourite music video
My favourite music video is 'All of the Lights' by Kanye West. the music video's idea of using many bright colours flashing on a different settings allowed it to be used commercially post it's selling peak in the chart. After being released January 18th 2011 the song was used as the main song for the 2011 NBA All star game for previews, adverts and the introduction performance. The videos use of bright colours flashing continuously really fits in with the atmosphere created by the song.
Coursework Brief
In my coursework I will be creating a Promo music video roughly 5 minutes in length, with help from a group who are also in my class. I will be also creating a digipak CD cover and a magazine advert to go with my music video.
